Today, Equal Measure, a national professional services firm with more than 40 years in the racial equity and social justice fields, released the below statement from President and CEO Leon T. Andrews, Jr. in response to the Supreme Court rulings upending decades of precedent for affirmative action in college admissions:

“Today’s Supreme Court rulings, while not shocking, serve as a sobering reminder that though the arc may bend toward justice, it doesn’t soften the blow when our freedoms are attacked. Affirmative action embodies America’s value of equality while acknowledging historic barriers to that ideal. These rulings severely kneecap colleges’ ability to ensure equal access to quality education—one of the best and most predictive drivers of economic progress and prosperity for Black Americans.

“Denying our country’s history does nothing to erase its existence or the reality of its enduring impact on generations of historically marginalized students moving through these institutions. In fact, these rulings endanger race-conscious considerations far beyond college admissions. It will now be even harder to implement racially equitable policy solutions in other key pillars of upward mobility like employment and housing.

“But our resolve to realize racial equity has and will never depend on the whims of the Supreme Court. For the past 40 years, Equal Measure has remained steadfast in its commitment to advancing social change and will continue this work as we strive to transform systems.”
